Scientology and Local Groups Join Forces in Dublin to Battle Cancer

Scientology volunteers joined local community groups and cancer survivors in Dublin’s Relay for Life, raising over €18,000 for the Irish Cancer Society. United in the fight against cancer and spreading hope keeps helping those with the problem and their families.

Brussels, Brussels, Belgium, 19th Jun 2024 – A surge of inspiration and togetherness swept through South County Dublin on June 1-2, as a mix of community organizations, cancer survivors and dedicated volunteers from different backgrounds united for the annual Relay for Life event. Hosted by the Irish Cancer Society, this 24-hour walk has raised over €18,000 so far with donations pouring in showcasing the community’s steadfast commitment to fighting cancer.

Participants from all walks of life and corners of the globe came together for Relay for Life with a shared mission: to honor lost loved ones to cancer, promote healing and spread a message of hope. This gathering truly embodied unity and the strength of efforts against one of humanity’s most worrying health challenges.

The event was graced by guests who added significance. Among them was Donna Marie Cullen, a cancer survivor and Ambassador for Relay for Life whose story of overcoming obstacles inspired many. Nico Crowley, named Tallaght Person of the Year also earned respect for his dedication as he completed the 24-hour walk, with only short breaks. Councillor Francis Timmons, known for his community involvement, in supporting the Relay for Life initiative, was also present at the event.

The resilience of the spirit was evident through the presence of cancer survivors from very different age groups, while the staff and volunteers from the Irish Cancer Society continued their invaluable efforts.

Volunteers from the Church of Scientology took part in Relay for Life for the second consecutive year, joining other teams to show their support. Their participation highlighted how cancer is a challenge that affects everyone regardless of race, color, religion or social standing.

We participate in Relay because cancer is one of the big challenges humanity faces, no matter our race, colour, faith or social status. We witness many tragedies but also many successes in beating cancer. We believe that the successes should be told, the pain should be shared and soothed, the community should have a chance to heal and anyone affected in any way should know that there is hope and help,” shared Asia Kuzma, a Church of Scientology volunteer who led their teams volunteer coordination and fundraising efforts this year.

The Church of Scientology’s team is actively raising funds, for the Irish Cancer Society thanks to the support from dance schools and community groups that organized events at the Scientology Community Centre. Encorps Stage School, Maharashtra Mandal Ireland, StageKidz Academy and Westside Performing Arts are among the contributors.

Relay for Life serves as an initiative in the fight against cancer, with events like those in South County Dublin playing a role in increasing awareness and funding crucial for cancer research and support. The Irish Cancer Society reports that at least 43,000 individuals in Ireland are diagnosed with cancer annually. The proceeds from Relay for Life directly aid cancer research projects, patient services and educational programs.

According to data from the World Health Organization, cancer stands as one of the leading causes of death worldwide with an estimated 19.3 million new cases and nearly 10 million deaths recorded in 2020. Events such as Relay for Life are essential in combating this disease by encouraging community involvement to raising funds and spreading messages of hope and strength.

The Relay for Life gathering in South County Dublin embodied Asia Kuzma’s message, a call to unite and stand together with strength and take action when faced with challenges.

As the donations keep coming in and the community comes together, it’s evident that nobody should be facing cancer alone. With support and everyone working together, there’s a glimpse of a future where cancer isn’t a daunting enemy anymore but a defeated one.

The volunteers, from the Church of Scientology, motivated by the teachings of its founder L. Ron Hubbard when talking about the power of help, along with groups and cancer survivors have shown that by standing united and putting in consistent effort, significant progress can be made in the battle against the disease. Events like Relay for Life raise funds and strengthen the community’s sense of empathy and optimism. In a world grappling with the challenges posed by cancer, such endeavors serve as a beacon of hope.
